The non academic things we learn in school

There are things I could talk about easily but they aren't in any way resolved apart from much of what is referred to isn't clearly fact so rather late in the day I decided to write this.

I was looking for something similar but more your boarding school boy as you see I had this image in my head of "Boris the Bold" leading on with the entire forms tuck box  saying "This could be jolly handy later on in my life".

In a way while we do have the ability to change, much of who we are is well established by the time we've left school that there is a lot to said for looking at the kinds of opportunities that can help people develop life skills while at it rather just a preoccupation with the academic as much as I don't give anyone who  doesn't value that an easy ride at all.

It may be something like being the Captain of a sports team or say running a club during recess, getting others involved, showing how to do things more effectively or fixing the competitions or presentation for say parents day.

These kinds of things do actually help like for example in my school we had a after school time gym class a friend run, taking the contributions, setting out equipment and exercises.
They were hardly well off, frankly my family was more well off than hers but she did an excellent job of it and so she had something to say about herself for when she left school because she demonstrated skills and abilities that people especially employers are looking for.

She really impressed me and within our school she wasn't alone either.

One thing I tend to think is having either all girl or boy settings means it is more likely everyone will take those opportunities sensing they need to be done rather than just assuming "The girls will do that" or "we'll leave that to the boys of form V" because they will need to take ownership apart from making each group more in tune with what its members want as trying to run something coe-od doesn't always work well.

Reflections on a away visit

I've been away for a number of days in connection with that all encumbering part of my life that I don't really need to write a large account of here other than it's so very much the me I've been talking about for the  last ten months or so about here.
There are some reflections I do feel the need to talk about about on here one is learning to be grateful for what people freely do for you such as seeing I was struggling at one railway station a couple kindly offered to help carry my luggage and even checked when I got to the end of the stairwell I was all right who I no idea of.
There's the people who kept an eye on me as I was feeling a little homesick where I stayed, spending time with and the friend who knowing the sort of fiction I like, gave me a cherished book from their collection.
Then there is a friend of mine who kindly put me up, offering a cooked meal and a lift to the train coming back completely out of the blue, seeing I was on the right platform for my train to come in.
These acts of kindness really moved me but whereas in the past I'd of blocked out my emotions I thanked them properly for all those things they did not have to do,that I have no right to expect nor demand expressing my gratitude, revealing my sense of being humbled openly.

From the heart

Following on a bit from last weeks post there is something I'd like to talk about that is a bit a painful about things like age and that as it applies to me.
It doesn't matter how many birthdays I may happen to have or how that that may on paper make me, by conventional  standards I have not really moved into what some might call adulthood and in some respects at least aspects of my behavior may appear to be immature.

In lots of ways I have more in common emotionally and that with mid teens which no amount of masking can really cover so sometimes people find themselves dealing more with a kid-adult because of how events in my childhood have left me.
Sometimes I do wonder what would happen if people would treat me more like a child of that age as in some respects I do feel having that kind of oversight and even rules is really better for me as I can cope better with it, achieving more.
